Finding purpose through support: A volunteer’s journey with MAID Family Support Society

Volunteering is often described as a selfless act, but for many it’s also a deeply personal journey of healing and connection. Nikki, a dedicated volunteer with MAID Family Support Society (MFSS), shares how her own loss led her to this meaningful work and how supporting others has transformed her grief into purpose.

A personal calling to volunteer

The loss of her father was a profound and life-changing experience for Nikki. She sought to help others navigate the complexities of grief associated with Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), ensuring that no one would feel alone in their journey.

“I wanted to help inform and support others going through it so it’s not as scary or lonely and to try and alleviate some of the complexities of this particular grief,” Nikki explains.

Moments that matter

Every interaction Nikki has with the families she supports reaffirms her commitment to this work.

“Every single phone conversation with a support. When they express their gratitude, I know I’m doing what I am supposed to be doing.”

Providing a compassionate ear and a safe space for others to share their emotions makes a lasting impact, not only on those she supports but also on her own journey of healing.

The rewards and challenges of compassionate support

Supporting families during such an emotional time comes with its rewards and challenges.

“The most rewarding part is helping them feel heard and less alone,” Nikki says.

However, there are times when the emotional weight of the role can be overwhelming.

“Sometimes, I don’t feel the capacity to support, but I overcome it by having the most supportive colleagues and team leaders who always have me and the support covered.”

Emotional and mental preparation

Before each call, Nikki takes deliberate steps to ensure she is emotionally and mentally present.

“I take deep breaths before a call and centre myself. I usually take my calls outside while walking so I can ‘move’ the energy through me and also ‘leave the call’ outside.”

This mindful approach allows her to remain grounded while offering compassionate support to families in need.

Training and resources that make a difference

Nikki credits several key resources and experiences with helping her become an effective volunteer:

  • Lived experience – her personal loss has given her a deep understanding of the grief process
  • Certification as a Death Doula – formal training has equipped her with valuable skills in end-of-life care
  • Workshops and resources – offerings from organizations like MFSS, Bridge C-14, and MAiDHouse have expanded her knowledge and skills
  • Peer support – listening to and learning from fellow volunteers has been invaluable

Advice for future volunteers

For those considering volunteering in this field, Nikki offers heartfelt advice:

“For me, it helped me make sense of my loss. It gave my suffering a purpose and somewhere to channel the energy. I would also tell them that self-care is one of the most important parts of the role—if not THE most important.”

She emphasizes the importance of maintaining boundaries to avoid burnout, encouraging volunteers to listen to their own needs and step back when necessary.

Shifting perspectives on end-of-life care

Through her work with MFSS, Nikki has gained a deeper understanding of end-of-life care and decision-making.

“I have learned so much through others’ experiences. It has challenged my thoughts and clarified what I know to be true to my heart. It has reaffirmed that I think it is a gift!”
